Hurricane Prep: Is Your Garage Door Ready for Storm Season?

When homeowners think about hurricane prep, they think about shutters, roofs, and flood barriers — the garage door rarely makes the list. But it's often the single largest, weakest opening in a home's entire wind envelope, and a failed garage door is one of the most common ways hurricane damage starts.

Why the Garage Door Matters So Much

A standard double garage door is one of the biggest unbroken openings on most homes. If it buckles or blows in under wind pressure, the storm's force suddenly has a way into the house. That pressure pushes up against the roof from underneath — which is exactly how many hurricane-related roof failures actually start. A door that holds is often what keeps the rest of the house intact.

Is Your Door Wind-Rated?

Homes built or re-roofed more recently in Florida are often required to have a wind-rated (impact) garage door, but plenty of older homes across Tampa Bay still have standard residential doors with no reinforcement. If you're not sure which you have, it's worth checking — either the door itself needs upgrading, or a retrofit bracing kit can add significant strength to an existing door at a fraction of the cost of full replacement.

What to Check Before Storm Season

  • • Wind rating or bracing — confirm your door is rated for storm-force wind, or has a bracing kit installed.
  • • Track and hardware condition — a track that's already slightly bent or hardware that's already loose is far more likely to fail first under wind load.
  • • Panel condition — look for existing dents, warping, or cracks that weaken the door's structural integrity.
  • • Opener battery backup — a battery backup means you can still open the door manually or by opener during a power outage, which matters if you need to evacuate.
  • • Weatherstripping — worn seals let in wind-driven rain, which adds water damage on top of wind risk.

Don't Wait Until a Storm Is in the Forecast

Bracing kits, hardware repairs, and inspections take time to schedule properly, and that time gets a lot harder to find once a storm is a few days out. A pre-season inspection is the best time to catch a weak point while there's no pressure. We offer garage door inspections across Tampa and the rest of the Bay — see our full services list or call 727-687-2934 to get on the schedule before the season picks up.
